Open sourceIn informatica, open source (termine inglese che significa sorgente aperto) indica un software i cui autori (più precisamente i detentori dei diritti) ne permettono, anzi ne favoriscono il libero studio e l'apporto di modifiche da parte di altri programmatori indipendenti. Questo è realizzato mediante l'applicazione di apposite licenze d'uso.

L'open source ha aperto un mondo immenso, tutti noi utilizziamo almeno un programma di questo tipo. I programmi di questa tipologia sono facilmente migliorabili, cioè essi permettono a un numero illimitato di programmatori di "metterci le mani". Pensiamo ad OpenOffice, grazie alla pubblicazione del codice sorgente e alle migliorie che alcuni programmatori hanno potuto fare, esso è diventato un valido e quasi unico concorrente di Office.

Ovviamente un programma open source difficilmente segue una linea di sviluppo, in quanto gli sviluppatori non hanno un riscontro economico con l'utilizzo di questo software da parte degli utenti finali e per questo molti lavorano su questi progetti nel tempo libero. Esistono anche degli investimenti che alcune società hanno effettuato su questo mondo, pensiamo ad Sun (Open office) o a Canonical (Ubuntu).

Il mondo commerciale è sempre più contrastato da software di questa natura, anche per un netto risparmio in termini economici. In questi anni stiamo affrontando una fase particolare, attualmente il mercato è ricoperto da prodotti marchiati Microsoft, o comunque in stretto legame con essa, al tempo stesso diversi prodotti open source stanno ottenendo buoni risultati di espansione di mercato, questa transazione non è assolutamente facile. Prima di tutto bisogna convincere le aziende e anche gli utenti comuni a cambiare, il cambiamento può a volte risultare difficoltoso e creare seri problemi.

 Per il mancato apportTipologie softwareo di risorse, l'open source può oggi esistere e domani non esistere più.

Il mondo del codice sorgente libero ha prodotti in diversi campi:

- Sistemi operativi: Linux (Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, Mandriva, ...), Solaris;

- Suite per ufficio: OpenOffice, Go oo, Koffice ...;

- Browsers: Firefox, Konquero, ...;

- Sicurezza: ClamWin, ....;
