utp (unshield twisted pair): cavo non schermato;
stp (shield twisted pair): cavo schermato;
Per schermato si intende che il cavo è protetto da interferenze esterne (campi elettromagnetici ecc.).
Velocità teorica: 10/100 Mbit/sec.
Cavo “dritto”: collega due apparati attivi (host) con un centro stella (es. hub);
Cavo “inverso”: collega due apparati attivi (host) direttamente, cioè senza passare per un centro stella. Solitamente questi cavi sono caratterizzati da un rivestimento rosso.
Questo mezzo trasmissivo è il più diffuso e utilizzato.

La fibra ottica (il futuro) si divide in due categorie (caratterizza il modo di trasmissione):
