Tutti noi abbiamo sicuramente "chattato" almeno una volta nella vostra vita. La chat può essere un luogo di incontro e di amicizia che permette
di avere il mondo e milioni di persone alla portata di un click. Possiamo conoscere ragazzi e ragazze con esperienze diverse, confrontarci con loro, scambiare opinioni e perché no stringere una bella amicizia.
Purtroppo ci sono molti aspetti negativi. L'identità della persona dietro a un pseudonimo è sconosciuta. Potrebbe veramente essere la persona che noi abbiamo conosciuto o essere esattamente la persona che non avremmo mai voluto conoscere. Finché siamo davanti al PC siamo protetti, almeno che non ci sporgiamo con atteggiamenti e azioni particolari. Di fatto basta inserire il contatto della persona che non vogliamo più incontrare nella black-list e questa non ci 
contatterà più.
Molte persone utilizzano le chat per fare cose più particolari e a luci rosse. Cose testuali sono sicure fino ad un certo punto, ma quando andiamo oltre (foto, video e voce) le cose si complicano parecchio. Noi diciamo con certezza: "Non fate queste cose in rete, è pericoloso".
Un rischio serio è gli incontri al buio, cioè incontrarsi con persone conosciute in chat. Ovviamente si può giungere al punto in cui dopo mesi che si conosce una persona si abbia anche voglia di incontrarla. Almeno le prime volte incontratela in luoghi affollati (bar, piazze, discoteche) in modo di avere una certa tranquillità.
I genitori molte volte lasciano i figli da soli davanti al PC non sapendo cosa fanno o semplicemente accontentandosi della classica giustificazione del figlio: "Sto studiando!". Un genitore responsabile dovrebbe sedersi vicino al figlio e guidarlo nella navigazione web, sopratutto quando il figlio chatta.
La rete ha grosse potenzialità, ma altrettanti pericoli.
